Jane McDonald has admitted that there isn’t a single morning when she doesn’t think about her late fiancé, Eddie Rothe, as she opens up in a raw and emotional interview about love, loss and the long road through grief.
The 62-year-old singer and TV presenter lost Eddie to lung cancer in March 2021, aged 67 — a heartbreak that, she says, still shapes every part of her daily life.
Asked by Bella Magazine whether she misses having someone to share her world with, Jane replied quietly:
“Of course I do. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t think of Eddie, talk of him – it’s awful.”
She went on to explain the reality behind the brave smile viewers so often see.
“I’m not going to butter this up in any way: grief stays with you all the time,” she said. “But what you have to do is sit it beside joy. You have to bring as much joy into your life as humanly possible, so that you feel more joy than the grief. I’m just about level now.”
Every morning, Jane now begins her day with a mantra, choosing to walk a positive path no matter how heavy her heart feels. She also believes many of the opportunities that have come her way since Eddie’s death might never have happened had she retired as she once planned — and that continuing to work, and hopefully bring happiness to others, is a purpose he somehow left her.
Despite everything, Jane says she feels no pressure to find love again. She feels “blessed” to have met the right person once in her lifetime and is at peace if it never happens again.
“The joy and laughter we shared was second to none,” she said.
Jane first met Eddie as a teenager before reconnecting in the early 2000s. They became engaged in 2008, but their love story was cruelly cut short when he died following his battle with lung cancer.
Earlier this year, it emerged that Jane had placed her £1million Yorkshire bungalow on the market — four years after Eddie’s passing. She had lived in the five-bedroom home for 18 years, pouring her heart into renovations, but later admitted it had become “too big” and too full of painful memories.
The property, bought in 2007 for £485,000, boasted four bathrooms, a gym, conservatory, walk-in wardrobes and sweeping garden views. In a separate interview, Jane revealed that losing both her mother Jean in 2018 and Eddie in 2021 finally forced her to leave.
“There was too much history there,” she said quietly.
She has since moved into a smaller home nearby and also purchased a bolt-hole by the sea, where she now finds peace. Jane currently lives with her lifelong friend Sue Ravey — her former singing partner and Celebrity Gogglebox co-star — who moved in after Eddie’s death.
“She’s still my bezzie mate,” Jane smiled. “We still do everything together.”
Looking ahead, Jane is embracing a new chapter. Her latest travel series Pole to Pole launches tonight on Channel 5 at 9pm, taking her from Antarctica to the Arctic. Her album Living the Dream is available to pre-order, and tickets for her 2026 tour are already on sale.
“Life is short,” Jane reflected. “It’s not a dress rehearsal. Grief never leaves you — but you have to bring as much joy into your life as you possibly can, so it balances.”
