I’m A Celebrity favourite Tom Read Wilson has once again captured public attention — this time, not for his elegant vocabulary or charming jungle moments, but for a surprising piece of family history he recently addressed on air.

The much-loved Celebs Go Dating star, known for his poetic speech and encyclopedic knowledge of language, shared that his passion for words comes directly from his father, a dedicated English teacher. But it was his parents’ unexpected love story that raised eyebrows during an appearance on E4’s comedy panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats.

“It was an unusual situation… but it never felt strange to me.”

While discussing his upbringing, Tom explained that his father taught at Bradfield College in Berkshire — the same school where his mother, Juliette, briefly attended as an older student.

Tom recalled:
“My maternal grandfather also taught at the school, and sometimes the older girls would date the younger teachers.”

Comedian Rob Beckett jumped in with a cheeky question:
“So your dad was a teacher there… and your mum was a student?”

Tom gently clarified that his mother was 18 years old at the time and “coming of age,” while his father was 16 years older.

Host Jimmy Carr summarised with a lighthearted quip — but Tom made it clear the age difference never troubled him.
“I never really thought about it,” he said simply.

His parents eventually went their separate ways, and today it is his mother Juliette who proudly supports him during his time in the jungle.

A Mother’s Pride

After travelling to Australia to cheer him on, Juliette spoke lovingly about her son’s distinctive way with language:
“He was born with a dictionary in his mouth. His father is an English teacher — that’s where he gets it from!”

She laughed that Tom’s vocabulary sometimes leaves her puzzled, but she wouldn’t change a thing.
“He’s always been like that. Sometimes I don’t understand what he says… but it’s wonderful.”

Tom’s Courage Surprises Even His Family

While fans adore Tom’s warmth, politeness and humour, his mother admitted she was genuinely impressed to see him bravely handle snakes during a recent challenge.
“Deep down I knew he was courageous,” she said, “but that moment with the snakes was very brave.”
