A heartbreaking moment unfolded in one of Los Angeles’ most affluent neighborhoods as Billy Crystal was seen wiping tears from his face outside the home of his longtime friend and collaborator Rob Reiner, just hours after the iconic filmmaker and his wife were found dead.

The When Harry Met Sally star, 77, appeared visibly shaken as he stood within a police cordon surrounding Reiner’s Brentwood mansion on Sunday evening. With a patrol car parked behind him, Crystal raised his hands to his face and slowly wiped his eyes while walking beside his wife, Janice Crystal.
The devastating scene came after police confirmed that Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were discovered inside their home with what authorities described as knife wounds. Detectives are currently treating the case as a homicide investigation.

Crystal, who shared decades of friendship with Reiner, is understood to have visited the property shortly after the tragic discovery. According to witnesses, he appeared deeply emotional as he left the scene.
Another close friend of Reiner, Larry David, was also spotted near the mansion. The Curb Your Enthusiasm creator, 78, was reportedly overcome with emotion as he reacted to the news that the bodies found inside the property had been identified as Reiner and his wife.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that the couple’s deaths are being investigated as a double homicide. A heavy police presence remained outside the home as officers worked through the early stages of the investigation.
In a statement released Sunday night, the Reiner family said:
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

A neighbor told ABC7 that Crystal and David arrived at the scene separately and that Crystal left in tears.

Reiner and Crystal’s bond stretched back nearly 50 years. The two first met in 1975 while appearing on the legendary sitcom All In The Family, where they played best friends. Their on-screen chemistry quickly turned into a deep off-screen friendship.
Writing for The Hollywood Reporter in 2016, Crystal reflected on their connection:
“It worked really well, and we said, ‘It feels right onstage — why don’t we just continue this in our lives?’ We became the closest of friends.”
Their friendship reached cinematic history when Reiner directed Crystal in the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, starring opposite Meg Ryan. Written by Nora Ephron, the film remains one of the most beloved rom-coms of all time.
Crystal once recalled sitting beside Reiner during the film’s first screening, describing the thunderous laughter that erupted during its most famous scene — a moment they both knew would cement the movie’s legacy forever.
Beyond that classic, Reiner built one of the most influential directing careers in Hollywood history, helming timeless films including Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President, and The Bucket List.
Reiner followed in the footsteps of his father, comedy legend Carl Reiner, who died in 2020 at age 98. Before becoming a powerhouse director, Rob Reiner rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All In The Family, earning two Emmy Awards and multiple Golden Globe nominations.
Reiner met his wife Michele Singer on the set of When Harry Met Sally. The couple married in 1989 and went on to share three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Their daughter Romy reportedly lives across the street from the family home and is believed to have discovered the tragic scene.
In recent years, Reiner continued to work, releasing Spinal Tap II: The End Continues earlier this year — a sequel to his groundbreaking 1984 mockumentary.
As tributes continue to pour in from across Hollywood, the image of Billy Crystal standing quietly outside his friend’s home has come to symbolize the depth of the loss — not just of a filmmaker, but of a cherished friend.
