The Duke of Sussex mimicked Alison’s now meme-famous misunderstanding from her 2024 Bake Off segment with contestant Mark Lutton, recreating the awkward moment alongside host Stephen Colbert in a bizarre lip-sync skit.

In the original New Year’s Day special clip, Alison accidentally thought Lutton was telling her to “beg for me,” when he was actually saying “bake for me” — a moment that quickly became viral.

The unexpected Late Show recreation quickly ignited reaction online and was later shared by Meghan Markle on social media, bringing the moment back into the spotlight.

Soon after, Alison reshared the clip on her own Instagram Story, marking her first public reaction to the unlikely royal parody.

Mark Lutton has also now reacted to the surreal moment, admitting he never imagined the misunderstanding would go so far.
The Northern Irish baker, now based in Liverpool, said:

“Never did I think my mispronunciation would have such an impact.”

He later reposted the clip himself, adding:

“Breaking my Instagram silence to share this gem!”

This marks Prince Harry’s second appearance on The Late Show, following his explosive 2023 visit to promote his controversial memoir Spare.

Alongside the Bake Off spoof, Harry also took several political swipes, referencing the ‘No Kings’ protests against Donald Trump, before suggesting that Americans are now “obsessed with royalty.”

However, the main focus of the conversation later shifted toward the upcoming Christmas season, as Harry joined Colbert in a playful Hallmark-style holiday sketch.

In the skit, the duke wandered through the studio pretending to be lost while searching for an audition for a fictional film titled:

“Gingerbread Christmas Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska.”

As artificial snow fell around them, Harry joked about being a “handsome prince” and said Colbert simply “had to believe.”

He then quipped that he would “do anything” to land a role in a festive movie — joking that he could ride a horse and fly a helicopter — before playfully boasting about his Hollywood connections through his wife.

Colbert later crowned Harry the show’s “official Late Show Prince of Christmas,” prompting loud cheers from the audience.

Despite the festive tone, several of Harry’s jokes appeared politically charged, including remarks aimed at Trump and CBS’ decision to pay $16 million (£13.5 million) to settle a legal dispute with the former President.

Elsewhere during the appearance, Harry was also booed by sections of the audience after suggesting that America had “elected a king” in Trump, before criticizing the network over its settlement.

The light-hearted television moment, however, arrived against a deeply serious backdrop.

The Daily Mail revealed that Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, is currently in intensive care in the Philippines following emergency surgery.

Neither Harry nor Meghan have publicly commented on his condition.

Mr Markle, 81, was rushed to hospital earlier this week after falling gravely ill at home. He underwent around three hours of surgery and remains in intensive care, now facing a second procedure to remove a blood clot.

The former television lighting director has never met his son-in-law or his grandchildren, Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, and has struggled with poor health for several years.

On the eve of Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, he suffered two heart attacks, preventing him from flying to the UK. As a result, King Charles walked Meghan down the aisle at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Mr Markle later told the Daily Mail that the King’s gesture was:

“The most gracious and kind thing to do. I shall be forever in his debt.”

In 2022, he also suffered a stroke, leaving him unable to speak for months. Although he later regained some speech after therapy, he has become increasingly frail.

Despite the rising concern surrounding her father’s health, Meghan continued to trail Harry’s Late Show appearance on Instagram, sharing the clip of his awkward lip-sync skit with Colbert.

For Alison Hammond and Mark Lutton, however, the unexpected royal revival of their Bake Off moment has turned an accidental misunderstanding into one of the most surreal crossovers of the year — blending baking, royalty, late-night TV and global headlines in one unforgettable clip.
