EXCLUSIVE – “It Was Something I’d Always Been Anxious About”: Lauren Laverne’s Quiet Health Fear That Turned Into a Life-Changing Discovery

Desert Island Discs host Lauren Laverne reveals the moment she learned she had cancer — just two years after losing her mum to the same disease.

Lauren Laverne has opened up about how she discovered she had cancer only two years after her beloved mother died from the illness — a moment that she says had haunted her long before the diagnosis. ryan gosling and america ferrera attend special barbie screening and q&a in london

“It was something I’d always been anxious about,” she admitted in an emotional interview. “Especially if you’ve had family members go through it, you develop this watchfulness over your own health. That’s exactly why I kept getting checked — and thank God it was picked up so early.”

In her first interview since receiving the all-clear, the much-loved presenter — who now hosts Desert Island Discs — reflected on the whirlwind of events that shaped the last few years of her life.

“The previous six years had been pretty bonkers — in good and bad ways,” she explained. “In 2018 I turned 40, and that was the year I got Desert Island Discs and the Radio 6 breakfast show. Two weeks after landing that role, my dad became ill and passed away.” Lauren Laverne back on BBC Radio 6 Music after cancer diagnosis | Wales Online

Tragedy struck again in 2022 when Lauren’s mum died after a battle with terminal cancer — a loss that ultimately pushed her to get her own health thoroughly checked. During those precautionary tests, doctors made the shocking discovery that she too had cancer. I sat in the car and just cried”: Lauren Laverne on the relief of being cancer-free

Now cancer-free, Lauren said the moment she was given the all-clear in November brought an emotional release she hadn’t realised she was holding back.

“I think it’s only when the storm passes that you understand how much you’ve been carrying,” she said. “The day I was discharged, Graeme got me into the car — and we didn’t even start it. We just sat there and both burst into tears.”

Looking back on the ordeal, the broadcaster believes the experience has fundamentally changed her.

“One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that it’s all life — the good and the painful, all part of the texture,” she reflected. “Real life is built from big experiences, whether we choose them or not.”

She added: “Going through something this serious expands your emotional vocabulary. I’ve learned a massive amount and I hope I’m a better person now. I probably love my life more than I did before — because I appreciate everything about it.”
