“A Weekend That Changed Everything…” — Craig Melvin’s ‘Very Special’ Family Update Leaves Today Show Viewers Smiling After Emotional Milestone

Craig Melvin had barely taken his seat on the 3rd Hour of TODAY when Al Roker leaned in with a knowing smile and teased that his co-host had enjoyed a “very special” weekend. Within seconds, the studio softened — because this wasn’t just another celebrity update. Over the weekend, Craig and his wife, sports broadcaster Lindsay Czarniak, marked a powerful milestone for their eight-year-old daughter Sybil, who celebrated her First Communion, the second of the seven holy sacraments of the Catholic Church. For the Melvin-Czarniak household, it was a quiet but deeply meaningful moment — one that Craig said left the whole family feeling “delighted.”

Speaking on the April 7 episode of TODAY, Craig shared:

“It was nice. It really was. My daughter had her First Communion, so we celebrated her yesterday.”

After the church service, the family gathered for what Craig described as “a little brunch,” proudly revealing photos to his co-hosts Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer. The studio quickly zeroed in on one detail — a pink, cross-shaped cake, which Craig admitted surprised him.

“Sometimes those cakes don’t taste very good,” he joked, before adding, “but this one — strawberry — was fantastic.”

Craig and Lindsay, who married in 2011, are also parents to their ten-year-old son Delano. The proud dad has been sharing a wave of “firsts” recently, updating viewers on his son’s very first Little League baseball game, Sybil’s first candle-making project, and even the family’s first ever NBA game together — a New York Knicks match at Madison Square Garden.

“I think we’re going to become a Knicks family,” Craig laughed at the time, noting they’d never really had a basketball team to support before.

The joyful family moments come during a landmark year for the TODAY anchor. In November, Craig was officially announced as Hoda Kotb’s replacement and Savannah Guthrie’s new co-host — a move that stunned and thrilled NBC insiders alike.

“I am beyond excited and grateful,” Craig said at the time, calling the promotion “the latest in a long line of blessings.”
Savannah revealed the newsroom broke into applause when the news was shared, adding:

“This is one of the most popular decisions NBC News has ever made.”

From a high-school intern at NBC affiliate WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, to becoming one of the faces of morning television, Craig Melvin’s journey has come full circle — now anchored not just by career success, but by moments like this at home.

And judging by the smiles in those First Communion photos, this was a weekend the Melvin family will never forget.
