BBC Breakfast viewers were left glued to their screens — half laughing, half hiding behind their hands — after an unexpectedly icy moment erupted between comedian Paul Whitehouse and his wife, Dr Mine Conkbayir, during what was meant to be a light-hearted interview about their new podcast I’m ADHD, No You’re Not.
What the audience got instead… was a marital showdown nobody saw coming.
A Frosty Start Before the Cameras Even Rolled
Hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty tried easing viewers in, joking that the couple had already had a mini-argument off-air about “who was going to sit where.”
Paul, 67, tried brushing it aside with a cheeky, “Everything’s fine — for now,” but the tension was already crackling like static.
Mine Opens Up — And Paul Cuts Straight Across Her
Mine, 45, began telling the emotional story of her late ADHD diagnosis at 43 — how professionals had initially mistaken it for trauma, and how conversations with her husband eventually inspired their podcast.
But then Paul suddenly butted in, visibly irritated:
“Can I just jump in? I wasn’t that dismissive when you got diagnosed…”
Mine shot him a glare sharp enough to cut glass:
“It’s not about you, is it?”
For a split second, the studio fell silent.
Then Paul doubled down:
“Well, it is my turn to speak. If I could ever get a word in…”
Viewers across the country collectively winced.
Paul’s ‘ADHD Isn’t My Problem’ Remark Sparks Backlash
In an attempt to explain his role in the podcast’s title, Paul recalled being sceptical of comedians calling themselves ADHD, joking about watching act after act introduce themselves with:
“Good evening, I’m ADHD.”
But when Naga asked whether he’d ever wondered if he might also have ADHD, Paul waved it off completely:
“No, never. Nothing wrong with me.”
Social media erupted within minutes.
-
“Car crash TV — outdated and uncomfortable.”
-
“Why is he talking over her in a segment about ADHD?”
-
“That ‘nothing wrong with me’ comment… yikes.”
Comedy Couple… or Couple Who Need Counselling?
Despite the strained back-and-forth, Mine affectionately referred to Paul as a “saint,” saying he has always been supportive of the challenges she faces.
But Naga wasn’t convinced:
“I do worry about you two rowing…”
Mine responded with a laugh that felt a little too real:
“If any marriage counsellors are watching — feel free to get in touch.”
A Complicated Love Story Behind the Cameras
The pair’s dynamic has always been unconventional.
They met when Mine was a 23-year-old student working in a shop, and despite over a decade together — and a daughter named Delilah — they don’t actually live together. Their homes sit minutes apart in North London.
Mine once revealed Paul wears a white-gold commitment ring engraved with:
“I love you, Barn.”
Her nickname: Barnacle.
A detail that makes their on-air tension feel even more surprising — and even more human.
