It was meant to be the final, hopeful hours of 2025. Instead, for This Morning favourites Nik and Eva Speakman, New Year’s Eve became a day they will never forget for the most heartbreaking of reasons.
The ITV therapists revealed that they had been forced to say goodbye to their beloved cat Monkey — a long-haired family pet they openly described as “one of our own.”
Sharing an emotional carousel of photos on their joint Instagram, Eva told followers that the decision had been made earlier that morning.
“Our hearts are truly broken,” she wrote. “But we feel incredibly blessed to have had him in our lives. Monkey brought us so much joy and we will miss him every single day. Sleep tight, our beautiful boy.”

She captioned the post: “This morning we had to say goodbye to one of our family. Our hearts are truly broken, but we feel so very blessed to have had him in our lives. Monkey brought us so much joy and we’ll all miss him so much. Sleep tight our beautiful boy.”
The post immediately sparked an outpouring of support from friends, colleagues and fans alike. Reality star and outspoken animal lover Vicky Pattison was among the first to comment, writing: “I’m so, so sorry guys. Monkey really was the best boy.”
The couple replied simply — and painfully — “He really was.”
This Morning chef Juliet Sear was also quick to show her support, while followers flooded the comments with messages of love, telling the family they were in their thoughts during such a painful time.
One follower wrote: “He has his wings now and will send you signs from heaven.”
A clearly emotional Eva replied: “I really hope so.”
Ringing in 2026 Through Tears
Despite their heartbreak, Nik and Eva chose to welcome in the New Year surrounded by their children, Liv and Hunter, refusing to let grief steal the final moments of 2025.
They even managed a small smile as they raised a glass alongside a surprise guest — Coronation Street legend Brian Capron, best known for his chilling role as Richard Hillman.
Uncertain Times Ahead for ITV Daytime
The Speakmans’ personal loss comes at a turbulent moment for ITV’s daytime lineup. From Monday, sweeping schedule changes will take effect, with Good Morning Britain set to expand, Lorraine reduced, and This Morning relocating to new shared studios as part of major cost-cutting measures.
Around 200 jobs are believed to be at risk — and it remains unclear when Nik and Eva will next return to the programme.
For now, though, the couple’s focus is firmly on family… and on healing from the loss of a tiny, furry companion who meant everything to them.
