I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star Tom Read Wilson has won viewers over with his warm personality and instantly recognisable voice — but behind the charm, a surprising family story has quietly resurfaced during his time in the jungle.
The First Dates favourite has previously credited his distinctive accent to his father, and fans have been fascinated by his background ever since he entered camp. However, Tom may have a little explaining to do when he finally leaves Australia.
During an earlier appearance on Channel 4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats, Tom told a story about how his parents met — revealing that his father was 34 when his mother was just 18, and that he taught at the school where she had been studying.
But now, Tom’s father Crispin Read Wilson has stepped forward to clarify that the version shared on TV was “factually incorrect.”
Crispin explained that Tom will be able to set the record straight once he exits the I’m A Celebrity jungle later this week.
According to MailOnline, Crispin said:
“I taught English for some years at Bradfield College. Tom’s grandfather taught French there. Tom never went to school there but grew up in a house on the campus. His mother, Juliette, never went to school there but grew up in a different house on the campus.
“Some time after Juliette left school when she was 20 and at college, she started a relationship with me. In May 1986 we married, and in November 1986 Tom was born.”
Sadly, Tom’s parents are no longer together. Speaking previously about his relationship with them, the 39-year-old said:
“I’m very close to my parents, but sadly they are now separated and my dad has remarried. My mum is a French teacher and a wonderful, zesty, rather naughty character.”
Tom has also openly credited his father with shaping his vocal style and love of language. Speaking to rapper Aitch during their time in the jungle, he shared:
“He was an English teacher, and he made it into stories all the time… I’m not a poet at all but I love the lyricism of it all.”
Tom’s Original On-Air Story
During his appearance on 8 Out of 10 Cats, Tom initially said:
“My father was an English teacher and that’s how I happened. My maternal grandfather taught at the same school and sometimes the eldest girls of the faculty would date the youngest teachers.”
A confused Rob Beckett then asked:
“So your dad was a teacher there and your mum was a child there?”
Tom replied:
“Well, she was 18, coming of age. He was 16 years her senior.”
He later admitted he had “never really thought about it” at the time.
Love Life Revealed in the Jungle
While sharing personal moments in camp, Tom also revealed that he is currently single. Speaking to Lisa Riley, he joked that although he is good at finding men, he struggles with “keeping them.”
Putting on a mock “butch” voice, he even joked that fellow campmate Kelly Brook would be his ideal woman.
Previously speaking to PinkNews in 2018 about his dream partner, Tom described exactly what he looks for in a relationship:
“I want my partner to be radically different to me on every possible level. I always say I don’t physically have a type except radically different to me because I always think two-thirds of beauty lies in fascination.
“I think there’s something beautiful in that post-coital moment where you look at someone and think, ‘How are you put together?’ I could spend the rest of my life mapping your face because it’s so different to my own.”
As Tom’s popularity continues to soar inside the jungle, fans are now eagerly awaiting what he will say once he finally addresses the story that unexpectedly drew his private family history into the spotlight.
