The 55-year-old presenter sent shockwaves through the BBC this weekend when she announced she was stepping down from her Saturday lunchtime slot after just seven months, instantly fuelling speculation that she was clearing the decks for the biggest job in British entertainment: replacing Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly on Strictly Come Dancing.

But friends insist the truth is far less glittery — and far more personal.

Zoe, they say, has quietly built the life she’s always wanted.
